Breed Introduction
The Djungarian Hamster (Phodopus sungorus), commonly referred to as the Siberian or Winter White Dwarf Hamster. Famous for its seasonal fur transition to a brilliant white, this hamster has a plump body and a short snout. Adults typically measure 3.5 to 4 inches (about 8.9 to 10.2 cm) in length, weigh around 30 to 50 grams, and have an average lifespan of 2 years. Their gentle temperament and strong interaction with humans make them particularly suitable as pets for beginners or children.
The Djungarian Hamster has a robust body, with fur color that changes with the seasons – from gray-brown in summer to pure white in winter, aiding in camouflage in their natural habitat. The pudding hamster, a variant of the Djungarian, is notable for its striking yellow fur and orange or golden stripes on its back. Its cream-colored fur, reminiscent of the dessert, is highly popular.
Native to the forests and steppes of Siberia and Eastern Europe, Djungarian Hamsters thrive in cooler climates. They are adept at burrowing elaborate underground networks to stay warm during the winter and cool in the summer.
Due to their sociable nature, it is recommended to house Djungarian Hamsters in pairs to fulfill their social needs. They require a regularly cleaned habitat and a balanced diet that includes seeds, fruits, and vegetables. Their small size means they do not take up much space, making feeding and cleaning convenient. Notably, Djungarian Hamsters have a greater tolerance for temperature fluctuations compared to other small hamsters.
Djungarian Hamsters exhibit significant sociability, appearing more active and healthier when cohabiting with their kind. They are nocturnal creatures, often resting during the day. Their gentle nature means they rarely bite, making them excellent interactive pets that are curious and enjoyable to engage with.
The Djungarian Hamster has a robust breeding capability, with multiple breeding opportunities throughout the year. Proper care and an adequate breeding environment are essential to ensure the healthy growth of the offspring.
Distinguishing From Campbell’s Hamster
While Djungarian Hamsters resemble Campbell’s Dwarf Russian Hamsters in size and appearance, they differ in behavior and habits. Djungarian Hamsters tend to turn white in winter, whereas Campbell’s maintain a consistent fur color. When it comes to cohabitation, Djungarian Hamsters, being more sociable, are better suited to living in pairs or groups, unlike the more solitary Campbell’s Hamsters. Additionally, Djungarian Hamsters are better adapted to cold environments, in contrast to Campbell’s Hamsters, which prefer milder climates.
